LA BAVISELA - Beginning of May

A Trip Among the Carso's Landscapes and Flavours

Carso stretches over the beautiful hilly landscape around Trieste. With its bare vegetation, it is nonetheless a charming area, thanks to its wide variety of landscapes and bright colour palette. A unique feature of the Carso is represented by the so-called 'osmize'. These are a legacy of Empress Maria Theresa, who issued an edict in the XVIIIth Century to allow farmers to sell the wine and food they produced at home by simply giving the public free access to their homes. The term 'osmiza' comes from the Slovenian word 'osem', meaning 'eight', because permission to sell one's produce was granted for eight days.
