Jewish Trieste

Sinagogue 4-5 hour tour

There have been Jews in Trieste since the middle of the 13th century.
The Jewish community has always played an important role particularly during the 19th century, which was the century of major cultural and civil development for the community when it had an important role in the economic life of the city.
It was during the 19th century that the first navigation and insurance companies developed such as Lloyd Adriatico and the Generali which were both founded by members of the Jewish middle class.

The local community enjoyed both flourishing periods which saw its members as leading personalities in the life of the city and very difficult periods of racial discrimination and deportation.
The only Nazi extermination camp in Italy the Risiera di San Sabba (the San Sabba Rice factory) is to be found in Trieste. Discovering this important aspect of Jewish history brings it to life as never before and Trieste offers many opportunities to witness this.

Our itinerary to discover the history and the traditions of the Jewish community in Trieste begins from Piazza UnitĂ  d'Italia and then passes into the former Jewish ghetto, rich in antique dealers and bric-a-brac shops. Then on to the "Carlo and Vera Wagner" Museum of the Jewish Community, which has many objects of Jewish ritual art on display, documents and books which testify to the life of the Jews in Trieste and indeed are one of the most important heritages of the Jews in Italy.
When the visit has finished we proceed on foot down via San Nicolò, where we can still find the Antique Bookshop which used to be run by Umberto Saba, and still has many rare and precious volumes on display.
We walk by the historical Pasticceria "La Bomboniera" founded by the Eppingers, a Hungarian Jewish family. The tour ends at the Synagogue of Trieste, a magnificent building which dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, it still has a certain importance in Europe even today. (Neither the synagogue nor the Jewish museum are open for visits on a Friday or Saturday or during days when there is a religious celebration).
Upon request it is possible to continue the tour and visit the Jewish cemetery where there are many tombs of important Jewish families from Trieste; and the Rice Factory of San Sabba, the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy. You will need two more hours to visit these two sites.
