From Trieste to Muggia by sea!
8 hour tour
Trieste is particularly famous for the Castle of Miramare, right on the sea front and the beautiful Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of the biggest squares in Europe which also overlooks the sea.
And it is because of its position on the sea that Trieste became a Free Port in 1719, and a commercial and shipyard centre.
On this tour we will be able to see the city from a different point of view, on board a boat which will take us from one side of the Gulf to the other.
We embark on the Delfino Verde at Piazza Unità and travel to the small town of Muggia, on the other side of the Gulf. On the way we have a wonderful view of Trieste from the sea.
Muggia, a characteristically Venetian town, is the only part of the Istrian peninsula which is still a part of Italy. There are many Roman and Mediaeval remains in the historical centre and a Castle which was one of the points of defence against the invasions from Istria in the 10th century, which in 931 came under the power of the Patriarchs of Aquileia.
At the end of our visit to Muggia we go to a wine and oil producer to taste their products.
We return to Trieste to visit Borgo Teresiano in the old town, an area rich in antique dealers and bric-a-brac shops and the Church of San Antonio Nuovo and the Serb-Orthodox Church of San Spiridione.
Our tour ends at one of the historical cafes in the centre, where famous personalities of Italian literature such as Saba and Svevo met Joyce to have a coffee and a chat.
