Venetian domination in Friuli
Udine, Palmanova and Villa Manin at Passariano

The evidence of Venetian domination is most obvious in Udine, Palmanova and Villa Manin at Passariano.
Our itinerary begins in Udine, from Piazza Libertà , often called "the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland". The most important monuments of the town can be seen here, traces of a Venetian past that began in 1420 and ended at the end of the 18th century.
From this square you can walk up to the castle through Arco Bollani which has got the Lion of Venice on the top, designed by Andrea Palladio in honour of the Venetian deputy Domenico Bollani.
We walk under the Loggia named Lippomano after the deputy who ordered its construction in 1487.
And so we arrive at the Church of S. Maria, the oldest church in the town, built on the site of an already existing church from the 8th century.
After our visit to Udine we proceed to Villa Manin at Passariano. It is the second largest Venetian villa which belonged to the last Doge of Venice. We visit the inside of the Villa and its park and then proceed to Palmanova, a Venetian fortress town, a model of an ideal city, planned in 1593 by the Office of Fortifications in Venice, it is unique in the region from both an architectural and urban point of view.
