Trieste and Aquileia
8 hour tour
Our tour begins in the historical centre of Trieste. In the 2nd century B.C. Trieste became a Roman colony (called TERGESTE). The inhabited centre was surrounded by high walls and enriched with important buildings and the city went through an important phase of economic growth. The remains of this prosperity can still be seen today in the Roman Theatre, which can be seen at the bottom of the hill of San Giusto, overlooking what was the old coastline; in the Arco di Riccardo, in the hill of San Giusto where part of the old Roman walls, built to defend the city, can be found; in the Orto Lapidario, which still has epigraphs, monuments and sculptures from the Roman, Mediaeval and modern period.
Aquileia is another important Roman centre, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Northern Italy. With our guide we follow an "archaeological" walk through the remains, the Roman Forum, the Basilica, founded at the beginning of the 4th century by Bishop Teodoro, it has the biggest mosaic floor in the western world and is rich in early Christian symbolism; the Roman burial ground; the houses; the river Port with the remains of warehouses and the quay on two levels, for different sized boats.
Our tour also includes a visit to the National Archaeology Museum, one of the most important museums on Ancient Rome in Italy, with sculptures, bas-reliefs, tombstones and many examples of minor art such as jewels, pottery and glassware and artefacts in amber.
