The First World War, battlefields
From Redipuglia to Gorizia
8 hour tour
Our itinerary begins at the War Cemetery at Redipuglia with an introduction by the guide followed by a visit to the Museum and a climb up to the War Cemetery. The War Cemetery was built in 1938 and it is the largest war memorial in Italy, it contains the graves of 100,000 soldiers killed during the Great War and the tomb of the Duca D'Aosta, the general of the Third Army Division.
Leaving Redipuglia we head for Monte San Michele, of great strategic importance, it was a southern stronghold for the defence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. If the weather is good we can stop off and visit some of the trenches and commemorative tombstones on the Karst. After a visit to the museum we proceed to San Martino del Carso, a small town commemorated by the poet Giuseppe Ungaretti ("Di queste case non è rimasto che qualche brandello di mura / di tanti che mi corrispondevano non è rimasto neppure tanto / ma nel cuore / nessuna croce manca / è il mio cuore / il paese più straziato"), which was the theatre of Italian attacks forcing the Austrians to defend themselves to the utmost.
The Austrians used gas in this area and the event is commemorated by the "Madonna delle Lacrime" (the Tearful Madonna) which can be seen in a niche at the crossroads of the village.
Lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon we go to Gorizia, we go up Borgo Castello to visit the Museum of the Great War which has a clear and excellent modern display of the events of the war and the social and human repercussions.
A short time free to wander around Gorizia then return to Trieste.
