The Second World War, Memorial Itinerary
Trieste
8 hour tour
The memorial itinerary visits all the places where significant events happened concerning the city of Trieste in the period 1943-1954.
The itinerary begins on the sea front (Rive) where the soldiers of the Bersaglieri regiment disembarked on 3rd November 1918 at the end of the Italian Risorgimento.
We continue along the seafront until we take the road leading up to the Risiera di San Sabba (a national monument and Nazi concentration camp), a testimony to the period from 8th September 1943 - 1st May 1945 when Trieste was separated from Italy and annexed as a province of the Upper Adriatic to the Third Reich.
From the Risiera di San Sabba we move on to the Foiba of Basovizza (a national monument) where, during the 40 days of the occupation of Trieste by Tito's forces (from 1st May to 12th June 1945) thousands of people were slaughtered.
If the weather is good there is a splendid view of the whole of the Gulf of Trieste from Basovizza along the coast of Slovene Istria and it's possible to see the places which used to be part of the Italian-Slovene border, which no longer exists now that Slovenia has become a part of the Schengen agreement.
From the Foiba di Basovizza we return down into the city passing by Palazzo Ritmayer where, in 1944, 51 Italian citizens were hanged in retaliation by the German occupying forces.
Then we arrive in Piazza S. Antonio where the Allied Military Government shot at demonstrators killing 6 in November 1953.
We finish our tour in Piazza Unità d'Italia where on 26th October 1954 troops of the Italian army entered for the second and last time.
