From Trieste to Aquileia
The old road of Via Flavia

Our itinerary follows the old road of Via Flavia from Trieste to Aquileia passing through religious communities which, since the beginning of the 18th century, built churches and religious centres.
We begin our itinerary at Muggia with a visit to the old sanctuary of Our lady of the Assumption, where almost one thousand years before Christ a fortress was built.
We move on to a similar place Monrupino-Repentabor on the Karst, with a church built in 1512 also dedicated to the cult of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrim site and a place for meditation and prayer.
We proceed to the sanctuary of Mary at Monte Grisa, overlooking the Gulf and high up on the Karst, where there is the national sanctuary of the Mother Mary and Queen.
As we leave the Karst our itinerary takes us towards the sea stopping at the church of San Giovanni in Tuba at the mouth of the River Timavo, where the river rises from its underground passage.
We follow the coast road to Aquileia and its Basilica. We also visit the archaeological remains and the old Roman river port.
