The Rilke path, springs of the river Timavo and the Castle of Duino

The Rilke path follows the cliff walk along the white cliffs to Duino. The walk is one of the most evocative and accessible of the Karst and has its roots in culture and literature. It is where the poet Rainer Maria Rilke used to walk when he was a guest of the Princes della Torre and Tasso. Read "Duino Elegies" and you will read about the fascination of the white cliffs of the Karst which jut into the sea.
Our tour begins with a walk along part of the Rilke path accompanied by a nature guide.
At the end of the walk we visit the Castle of Duino, the present residence of the Princes della Torre and Tasso, one of the most fascinating buildings of the Karst and rich in history.
At the end of the tour we get to the springs of the River Timavo. After the river has flowed through a vast area of the Karst plateau in Slovenia, forming the spectacular caves of San Canziano, it suddenly rises to the surface in a clump of willow trees at San Giovanni di Duino. A typical phenomenon of the Karst that never failed to amaze poets and travellers in the past.
We finish our tour in a nearby fishing village to taste some of the freshly caught fish.
